Populated with many trees over a century old, James Island is one of the truly hidden gems when it comes to picking out places to move to South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Over its development they’ve helped maintain lovely shoreline areas to boost the appeal for those moving to James Island neighborhoods.

If you like waterfront homes, James Island has plenty delicately placed on sizable lots. Walking and biking trails meander throughout James Island, many following the path of the shoreland.

Seaside Plantation

Seaside Plantation is an upscale neighborhood offering fantastic views of the surrounding marshland. If you are interested in newer homes with numerous amenities and incredible views, Seaside Plantation is the answer. With a large community dock and boat ramp, you will have plenty of space for your boat and won’t have to fight the congested public boat ramps during summer.

If you enjoy quiet walks on shaded walking trails, look no further. With miles of trails, you’ll always have places to explore amidst the bold green spaces and marshland. There are also several shaded playgrounds to keep the children entertained. The neighborhood is dotted with ponds and shoreline attractions.

Many homes were built in the 1990s and 2000s, providing various styles and floor plans to meet your needs. All offer beautiful views of the area marshlands, some with views of the Morris Island Lighthouse. Most homes have exteriors made of brick, though many have plank siding while holding to the traditional craftsman design.

Charleston offers excellent dining and shopping options and is only fifteen minutes away. And you’ll be delighted to know Folly Beach is only five minutes away.

White Point Estates

Providing unique views of some of Charleston’s most popular points of interest, White Point Estates is one of the smallest neighborhoods on James Island. It has helped the community to become tightly knit, helping and caring for one another.

This is also one of the closest communities to downtown – just a quick jump onto the James Island Connector, and you’ll be there.

The majority of the houses were built in the early 1980s and 90s and are ranch-style homes with inviting floor plans. The community takes pride in their homes and maintains them with updates and renovations.

While this might seem a bit plain for the Lowcountry region, don’t worry. You’ll find some of the most desirable homes overlooking the vast harbor, providing the best views on the island. The area is well maintained, with landscaped shrubs and an abundance of mature trees, giving the appearance of an older community.

Harbor Woods

Located just ten minutes from Charleston, Harbor Woods is dead center on the island. You’ll be less than ten minutes from Folly Beach, restaurants, and shopping areas. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find no two homes are alike, each one a unique offering of style and class.

Although most homes were built in the 70s and 80s, the area is well-maintained and full of southern charm. The houses are styled after Cape Cod, Lowcountry, and cottage homes. Plenty of newer homes are also placed on shorefront lots with beautiful views.

The new homes are on larger lots, offer larger lots, and allow for more square footage. With classic style touches, the houses provide a curbside appeal that few other James Island neighborhoods can.

Riverland Terrace

An older neighborhood, most of the homes in Riverland Terrace were constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, giving the community a quaint, homey feel. If you love historical homes with unique designs and floor plans, Riverland Terrace is where you want to be.

Within walking distance of many great attractions in James Island, Riverland Terrace is an excellent fit for anyone looking for a quaint, older neighborhood but still wants all the conveniences a larger metro area offers. There are many restaurants within a short walk and dozens of shopping boutiques.

But that’s not all. Just a short drive away is a six-hundred-acre park known as James Island Park that offers walking trails and impressive shoreline views of the surrounding marshlands.
